500 metric tonnes of chicken to meet any supply shortage

PETALING JAYA: The Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Ministry is working together with the Agriculture and Agro-Based Ministry to prepare about 500 metric tonnes of chicken to meet any shortage during the festive season.
Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Minister Datuk Mohd Shafie Apdal, in stating this yesterday, said the supply of chicken and beef being sourced from Kelantan, Selangor and Kedah was currently sufficient for the Hari Raya celebrations.
“If there is any shortage, the two ministries have agreed to prepare additional supply to meet the demand,” he told reporters after visiting Pasar Tani Mega in Section 17 here.
Asked to comment on the shortage of flour reported in several areas, Shafie said no report has been received so far though he acknowledged that the raw material price was rising at international level.
He said the ministry’s secretary-general Mohd Zain Mohd Dom had met with the flour suppliers who were asked to reduce slightly their prices.
“Possibly we will provide a subsidy to reduce the burden on consumers,” the minister said.
However, he added that the new price for flour or the subsidy amount has not been decided yet as the matter was still at the discussion stage.
On price checks, Shafie said a total of 212,392 premises nationwide had been covered since the ministry launched the operation on Sept 13 in conjunction with the festive season.
From the checks, a total of 672 premises were issued compounds totalling RM87,000 for offences like not showing price tags and selling above the ceiling prices fixed by the government, he said.
Shafie said the operation would continue until end of this year and be intensified during the festive season, involving 2,000 enforcement officers nationwide.
“This is to ensure that consumers are not affected by the tactics of sellers to raise prices and also to make consumers more at ease when making purchases, especially during the festive season,” he said.
